HuffPost reporter: Party leaders ‘know they screwed up’ stimulus bill

Zach Carter, a senior reporter at HuffPost, said on Hill TV’s “Rising” on Friday morning that party leaders in Congress realize they mishandled the $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill that passed last week.

Carter was asked about an article he wrote Thursday that suggested that disappointment with Congress’s handling of the stimulus bill is something both parties currently have in common.

“I think it’s pretty clear that leaders in both parties misjudged both the nature and the scope of this crisis when they were putting together this coronavirus package last week,” he said. “And you can tell they know they screwed up because they almost immediately started working on a new bill.”

Carter said Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is calling the upcoming stimulus bill “phase four” of Congress’s response to the pandemic to hide that fact that it’s a “do-over” of the bill passed last week.

“Nancy Pelosi is referring to this as ‘phase four’ of the coronavirus legislative response as if there’s some sort of very careful, tactful initiative underway in Congress to roll out specific new policies as the crisis spreads but in fact what they’re doing is trying to get a do-over on totally botching the process that they attempted to launch last week,” he said.
