HuffPost senior reporter Zach Carter told Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Wednesday that some businesses may never recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview, Carter predicted that many workers temporarily on unemployment benefits may face the prospect of their former jobs no longer existing after the outbreak abates.
“Four months of expanded unemployment benefits really does help for four months, but there’s no reason to believe that the companies that employ these people are either going to be around or are going to be willing to employ these people when the crisis is over,” Carter said.
“So, these jobs that have been lost may not be coming back. And if they do come back, it may be quite some time,” he added.
Carter went on to say that it doesn’t “make a whole lot of sense” for lawmakers to pursue cuts to payroll taxes as a means of stimulus during the outbreak, pointing to the millions of jobless Americans who would be unaffected. President Trump has touted the idea of implementing a payroll tax for weeks as part of an upcoming stimulus package, an idea largely dismissed by Senate Democrats.
