A spokesman for President Trump’s reelection campaign said Wednesday that it is gaining support among black and Hispanic voters in key battleground states.
“As the president is strong, and we will continue to see that strength grow because he’s getting stronger and stronger with black voters and with Latino voters in key states like Arizona — I would say Latino voters are very important there,” Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign’s communications director, said on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
Murtaugh said the president’s growing standing among voters of color will help buoy down-ballot Republicans in tight reelection races, citing Sen. Martha McSally (R) of Arizona, who is trailing in polls against Democratic former astronaut Mark Kelly.
“Senator McSally and senators in other battleground states will do well running with the president,” he said.
Murtaugh did not offer any evidence or polling to support his claims.
The president won just 8 percent of black voters and 28 percent of Latino voters in 2016 and is seeking to improve those figures, hoping that marginal gains could take crucial swing states away from former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee.
