Entrepreneur and former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang on Friday talked about his nonprofit Humanity Forward, an organization working to implement trials of universal basic income (UBI) across the country.
Yang ran on a platform of UBI earlier this year during the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries before dropping out of the race in February.
“It’s gratifying that so many people see that this is what we have to do for our people, but it’s heartbreaking that we’re being forced into this because of record, depression-level unemployment levels and [the coronavirus] pandemic that has devastated so many communities,” Yang told Hill.TV.
Yang noted that Humanity Forward is distributing $6.5 million in cash relief immediately to Americans in the country that need aid because of the pandemic.
The former presidential candidate also said that the nonprofit has launched a pilot program in Hudson, N.Y., where 20 people will receive $500 a month for the next five years.
