Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang on Friday addressed the deaths of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, two unarmed black men whose deaths have sparked national outrage.
“It’s horrifying and heartbreaking what happened to George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery,” Yang told Hill.TV. “Millions of Americans do not feel like our leaders have been responsive to them and their needs.”
“We’re unfortunately in a state where a spark can light fire in terms of protests and people feeling like their voices will not be heard unless they come together on the streets,” he added. “I wish that it had not gotten to this point.”
Yang also said the now-former Minneapolis police officer who placed his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes leading up to his death should be arrested “before anyone else.”
His remarks came shortly before Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday afternoon that Derek Chauvin, the officer in question, had been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
