County councilman in Maryland calls for reallocating police funds to social services

Will Jawando, a Democratic council member in Montgomery County, Md., told Hill.TV he wants to reallocate police funding to help “reimagine what public safety should be.”

“‘Defund the Police’ I think, like many other slogans, depending on who you ask, it’s going to mean different things. To me, it does mean reallocating funding,” he said.

Jawando said police funds, and other government funding, are desperately needed for social services. That shift, he said, will include having difficult conversations.

“I’m open to having those conversations,” he added.
