New York Working Families Party’s State Director Sochie Nnaemeka said Thursday that the primary results reveal “the richness and the growth of our progressive ecosystem” in the state.
Nnaemeka attributed the progressive wins in New York last week to strong “working relationships” within communities during an interview with Hill.TV.
“We saw a deep progressive alignment and strategic working relationship that made it possible for a lot of these insurgent upsets to happen,” she said.
The progressive wins included Jamaal Bowman’s apparent primary victory over 16-term Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), though the race has yet to be called.
Mondaire Jones, Ritchie Torres and Dana Balter, three other progressive candidates, have reached double-digit leads over their opponents in the House primary contests. Jones and Torres could become the first openly gay Black men elected to Congress.
