Culture editor Emily Jashinsky says pandemic makes China market more important for Hollywood

Emily Jashinsky, culture editor for The Federalist, told Hill.TV that the pandemic’s financial hit to Hollywood is manifesting itself through what she called a persistent problem of self-censorship to appease China.

“Theater chains have been shut for months now…not just here in this country but overseas and that’s creating some incredible financial constraints for them,” Jashinsky said. “So it makes that Chinese market more important to their bottom line.”

“Script writers in Hollywood know now not to make China the enemy of any movie and to include certain things in their films,” she said.

She asserted that some films are not approved because they would not appeal to Chinese audiences, adding that even jokes “have to be able to land in Chinese movie theaters, which makes it a totally different experience for the people who are making these movies.”
