YouTube star ‘Funky Academic’ says schools need to ‘decentralize’ amid coronavirus

YouTube star “Funky Academic” said Thursday that schools need to “decentralize” amid the coronavirus in order to allow public education to continue.

Doctoral student Irami Osei-Frimpong said society needs to address the “density problem” of public education during the pandemic by distributing students to different buildings that can be transformed to classrooms, like storefronts, malls and church recreational rooms.

“We need to think about how to keep public schools public, and appropriately as a public good, and not privatize these goods and just get rid of the density problem,” he said.

Osei-Frimpong said when schooling is moved into individual homes, education becomes privatized and moved “out of the public sector.”

“Instead of privatizing education, which is a weird burden to put on all these parents…we need to think about decentralizing schools,” he added.
