Oren Cass, executive director of the conservative think tank American Compass, said Thursday that the Lincoln Project, the anti-Trump Republican super-PAC, was “a group of political operatives who are not conservatives.”
“If you look at the Republicans they’ve been affiliated in the past, folks like [former Sen.] John McCain, [former Ohio Gov.] John Kasich, [former Utah Gov.] Jon Huntsman,” Cass said in a Hill.TV interview, calling those Republicans vestiges of a GOP that was predominantly “focused on the issue of business or… very, very interventionist foreign policy.”
Cass added that Lincoln Project members appeared to be “more pro-big business,” fitting “more comfortably in the Democratic party at this point.”
“I think you could be a conservative who is very unhappy with how Donald Trump governs, but I don’t think you can be a conservative who likewise thinks we should get rid of [Sen.] Josh Hawley [R-Mo.] and [Sen.] Tom Cotton [R-Ark.] and everyone else who’s actually trying to build a healthy Republican party,” he added, referencing two GOP senators the group has also pledged to target.
Founding members of the Lincoln Project include former campaign strategist John Weaver and attorney George Conway III.
