The American Prospect editor says McConnell is in the driver’s seat for next stimulus bill

David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect, on Friday said that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has significant control over the next coronavirus stimulus bill.

Dayen said that with the CARES Act — the initial multi-trillion dollar package that Congress passed in March — Democrats allowed McConnell to take the driver’s seat when it came to writing the bill, countering with amendments later.

More of the same is happening this time around, Dayen said.

“It seems like we’re still moving along that same timeline that we saw before where Mitch McConnell writes the bill in his office and then Democrats get a chance to tweak it,” Dayen told Hill.TV.

Dayen’s comments come as eviction moratoriums and unemployment insurance is set to run out July 31. Senate Republicans are expected to reveal their coronavirus stimulus package on Monday. Trump administration officials and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have said they want to get a deal by next Friday, July 31, a deadline they are all but guaranteed to miss.
