Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) in an interview on Hill.TV’s “Rising” weighed in on police reforms in the state after George Floyd’s death while in Minneapolis police custody in May.
The former congressman pointed to a “major” police accountability bill passed in the state legislature, noting that it banned the use of certain chokeholds and instituted further data collection.
Ellison also said the bill “took a stab at arbitration reform,” which has traditionally allowed fired officers to be restored to their departments.
“There have been a number of good steps forward, and that’s good,” Ellison said. “People are still protesting. They’re still raising the issues. They’re still demanding greater change.”
“There is a transformation of how we do public safety in Minneapolis going on right now,” he added.
