The Intercept’s Washington, D.C., bureau chief Ryan Grim joined Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Wednesday to discuss Sen. Ed Markey’s victory over Rep. Joe Kennedy III in the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary the previous day.
Grim explained that Markey’s victory was primarily owed to his embrace of the Green New Deal in 2019, which led to progressive activists and allies in Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), rallying behind his candidacy.
“He is not a convert on the question of climate change, and his decision to follow that up by…endorsing the Green New Deal, [and] giving Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a Senate sponsor, a lead sponsor, of her resolution very early on in 2019 really changed the game for him,” Grim said.
Markey defeated Kennedy by more than 10 points in Tuesday’s primary after a tough-fought race that began a year ago with polls showing the senator trailing his challenger by a similar margin.
