Intercept bureau chief previews Rhode lsland primaries

The Intercept’s Washington, D.C. bureau chief Ryan Grim discussed the insurgence of progressive candidates in Rhode Island’s Democratic primary during an appearance on Hill TV’s “Rising” on Tuesday.

The organization Renew New England, which teamed up with the Sunrise Movement, is backing 15 progressive candidates in Rhode Island’s state house.

“All of them are running on effectively the same platform: a green new deal, single-payer healthcare, a job guarantee with a living wage,” Grim said on “Rising.”

Grim said that the push for progressive local candidates comes after former Rhode Island Secretary of State Matt Brown ran an unsuccessful primary bid against incumbent Gov. Gina Raimondo.

“The left took its shot at the governor’s mansion and came up short so they stepped back and said ‘let’s see what we can do at the local level,’” Grim said. “There is an extraordinary gap between what Democratic voters think they might be getting when they send Democrats to the statehouse in Rhode Island and what they’re actually getting.”
