Author Cooper Lawrence discusses pros and cons of celebrity endorsements

Radio host and author Cooper Lawrence told Hill.TV that while celebrity endorsements have been shown to boost voter turnout, they don’t necessarily translate into more votes for the endorsed candidate.

“The only thing a celebrity does is sort of softens the image of the politician,” Lawrence said, adding that vocal celebrity support for a candidate “gives them a little bump for popularity but not for voting.”

The author of “Celebritocracy: The Misguided Agenda of Celebrity Politics in a Postmodern Democracy” argued that celebrities who supported 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton did not realize that they were “going up against the most powerful celebrity of all time” in President Trump.
