Greg Bluestein, a political reporter at The Atlanta Journal Constitution, said on Hill TV’s “Rising” Friday that Georgia’s Senate races and the president’s chances in the state are contingent on suburban voters.
“The suburbs are our biggest battleground here in Georgia and you’ve seen the shift, just as you’ve seen nationally, the inner suburbs are becoming very competitive,” Bluestein said.
He noted that the gap between Democrats and Republicans in statewide elections has narrowed over the years, with Republican Gov. Brian Kemp winning in 2018 by less than two percentage points against Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams.
Democrats also won several state legislative seats in the Atlanta suburbs that year, Bluestein noted.
“If Biden wins it’s because he’s able to not only galvanize African American voter coalition — which has long been the cornerstone of the Democratic party here in Georgia — but it’s also because he’ll be able to get out a higher percentage of white voters,” he said.
