Michigan Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist (D) on Wednesday said that President Donald Trump’s actions are “antithetical” to what Michiganders want.
Hill.TV’s “Rising” host Krystal Ball asked Gilchrist if Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s support for the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) made him vulnerable in the Great Lake state due to the effect they had on Michigan’s manufacturing industry.
“I think what people appreciate about the vice president is that he’s been willing to engage very deeply on very practical questions about the future of manufacturing and recognizing that while it may look different, there’s still a path for people to have jobs that are well-paying in this industry,” Gilchrist said.
During a Democratic presidential primary debate last year, Biden said that instead of re-joining the TPP, he would seek to “renegotiate” the deal to hold China accountable.
Trump narrowly won Michigan in 2016 and Gilchrist notes that he won by the slimmest margin of any state that went to him. Ball noted much of this was due to low voter turnout, particularly among the African-American community.
“One of the reasons why I actually led a march of 200 black men to vote in Detroit this past Saturday [was] to show that black folks in Detroit, black men in particular who are in constituency that some have been concerned about turnout especially when compared to black women… I’m showing that we’re gonna show up like we’ve never shown up before in this election,” said Gilchrist.
