Conservative pundit says the GOP cannot go back to pre-Trump ways

Though Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is projected to win the presidential election, the effects of President Trump’s administration have permanently altered the political landscape, according to policy expert Oren Cass, and these changes present new opportunities for Republican lawmakers going forward.

Cass, executive director of the conservative think-tank American Compass, said on Hill.TV Monday that the GOP needs to figure out where it stands going into a Biden presidency.

“We’re at the very start of a big fight about what is the agenda now for the post-Trump right-of-center, and let’s make sure it is a post-Trump right-of-center and doesn’t just go back to being the pre-Trump approach,” Cass said.

As Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball noted, many of the ideas and policies that Cass thinks Republicans should pursue, such as infrastructure banks, are avenues a Biden administration may likely be interested in as well.

“Well I’d say first of all, we’ll see what Vice President — President-elect Biden — does, you know. There’s gonna be a lot of pressure on him to go right back down the Obama rabbit hole. I think it would be terrific if he focuses on these issues instead. And I think there really is potential to find partners on the other side, to work on them.”

Biden has repeatedly said throughout his campaign that although he is a Democrat, he will be an “American president.” During his victory speech on Saturday he appealed to Trump voters, asking them to give him a chance.
