Libertarian author Robby Soave told Hill.TV’s “Rising” that he sees “potential problems” with vaccine passports.
Soave, who is senior editor at Reason.com, said he believes that as vaccination rates continue to rise, “deaths are going to continue to just plummet, and then I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of political will or will among the American people to accept something like this.”
According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 66 million people have been fully vaccinated in the United States.
Soave said he would prefer to see any decisions on vaccine passports made by the private sector, but still has concerns about any group collecting personal information.
“I don’t really want the American customer or consumer to kind of just be forced to accept these things particularly if it’s encouraged by the government,” Soave said.
During a recent briefing with reporters, White House press secretary Jen Psaki made it clear that the Biden administration has no intention of implementing a vaccine passport system.
“The government is not now, nor will we be, supporting a system that requires Americans to carry a credential. There will be no federal vaccinations database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential,” Psaki said.
Soave said he is also wary of public schools that require certain vaccines for students to attend class, calling it a potential “violation on their freedoms.”
“I wouldn’t want to go further down the norm of saying the government gets to tell you what choices you are going to make for your own body or for your own life in order to qualify for this public good. I definitely don’t want to go down that route,” he said.
