Former Iowa congressional candidate J.D. Scholten (D) joined Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Monday to discuss the challenges Democrats face in their efforts to win over voters in GOP strongholds.
Scholten, who unsuccessfully challenged now-former Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), said polling has shown that as many as four in 10 voters in some districts have fallen victim to misinformation and believe that the most recent round of stimulus checks as part of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan came from legislation passed during the Trump administration.
“The message is not getting through to these rural voters, and that’s a bigger problem than the actual message,” he said.
“Rural voters in these Republican states, they don’t like Republicans but they hate Democrats,” Scholten added.
