Briahna Joy Gray responds to Clyburn’s endorsement of Nina Turner rival

Briahna Joy Gray said Wednesday that House Majority Whip James Clyburn’s (D-S.C.) endorsement of Shontel Brown to replace Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge in her former Ohio congressional seat has actually fueled fundraising support for Brown’s more progressive opponent, Nina Turner.

In an interview on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” Gray, the former national press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, said that support for Brown from Democratic establishment figures like Clyburn and Hillary Clinton has only deepened the divisions between the moderate and progressive wings of the Democratic Party.

Every time one of these kind of establishment Democrat heavyweights comes out and endorses her opponent, she has an enormous fundraising day,” Gray said of Turner, who previously served as co-chair of Sanders’s presidential campaign.

“I think that is a real testament to the credibility that she’s raised over the course of the last few years as she’s campaigned… not just Bernie Sanders, but for the kinds of progressive issues that overwhelming majorities of Americans not only want, but really need at this crisis point,” she added.
