Vermont state Sen. Kesha Ram Hinsdale (D) said she was running on a platform of climate and environmental justice in the race for a seat in the U.S. House to represent Vermont.
“Vermont is a small but mighty state,” she told Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Monday. “Vermonters in our rural landscape think a lot about making sure we have a planet for our future generation.”
Hinsdale, who began her first term in the Vermont state legislature in 2009, will become the first woman and woman of color to represent her state in the U.S Congress if she wins the race.
The state senator is currently up against two other women, including Lt. Gov. Molly Gray (D), in the Democratic primary race to replace Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.).
But Hinsdale expressed enthusiasm that Vermont had the chance to make history this year.
“We have the opportunity to send not just a woman to Washington, but someone who continues that progressive legacy around changing the conversation in the country around economic, racial and environmental justice,” she said.
