GOP voter enthusiasm getting closer to Dems’, says pollster

Patrick Murphy, the director of the Monmouth University Poll, said on Wednesday that the enthusiasm gap among voters is starting to close as things get nearer to the midterm elections.

“Whatever party is out of power tends to be a little more excited in the summer, and then after we get passed Labor Day it just evens out regardless of which side it was to start with,” Murphy told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”

A new American Barometer poll released on Wednesday found that Democrats currently hold an 8-point lead ahead of Republicans on the generic congressional ballot.

The Real Clear Politics polling average on Wednesday showed Democrats with a 7.7 point lead.

A previous American Barometer survey conducted in late August showed Democrats leading by 11 points on the generic ballot.

Despite the narrowing gap, Murphy said that Democrats will likely take back the majority in the House in November.

“The overall numbers still favor the Democrats, there’s no question about it,” he said.

Democrats need to flip 23 seats in the lower chamber to win the majority.
