The Hill’s Reid Wilson says conservatives are widening the gap in the Texas Senate race

Reid Wilson, a campaign reporter for The Hill, said on Friday that more conservatives in Texas are starting to pay attention to the Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D), which favors the incumbent senator.

“I think what we’re seeing here is the sort of natural tightening that you see as people tune in to the race,” Wilson told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”

“The only people that were paying attention to the Texas Senate race over the summer were Democrats who were really obsessed with Beto O’Rourke or Republicans who love Ted Cruz,” he continued.

“Now that sort of the normal Texas voter who’s less attached to the news is tuning in, they’re more conservative than they are liberal, so, yeah, I’m not surprised that Ted Cruz is pulling ahead,” he said.

“Although there are going to be millions of dollars yet to be spent. Beto O’Rourke and Ted Cruz, to his credit, are raising money hand over fist in that race,” he said.

Polls throughout the campaign have shown a tight race between Cruz and O’Rourke, but a recent Quinnipiac University poll suggests the gap could be widening in Cruz’s favor.

Fifty-four percent of Texas voters said they preferred Cruz, while 45 percent said they favored O’Rourke.
