A majority of Americans want President Trump’s tax plan to be made permanent or left alone and allowed to expire, according to a new American Barometer survey.
The poll, a joint project of Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company found that 27 percent of respondents wanted the plan to remain permanent, while 29 percent said it should be left alone and allowed to expire.
Forty-four percent of respondents said the plan should be rolled back.
The poll comes one day after Trump said on Monday that he will push for a second round of tax cuts during Congress’ lame duck session after the midterms.
The president has touted his first round of tax cuts, passed last year, as one of his administration’s major legislative accomplishments.
However, Republicans have largely stayed away from talking about the Trump tax plan on the campaign trail.
“You don’t need a poll to show evidence that the tax plan is unpopular because Republicans are not talking about it,” campaign reporter for The Hill Reid Wilson told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
“It doesn’t show up in campaign advertisements, it doesn’t show up in their stump speeches,” he continued. “It’s just not a part of the political conversation, and that tells me that Republicans botched the rollout.”
Internal polling commissioned by the Republican National Committee (RNC) found last month that 60 percent of respondents said the tax plan helps corporations and the wealthy, while 30 percent said the opposite.
The American Barometer was conducted on October 19-20 among 1,000 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percent.
