President Trump and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have the “perfect setup” to work together if Pelosi becomes House Speaker in the new Congress, RealClearPolitics Washington bureau chief Carl Cannon said on Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking.”
“Nancy Pelosi and Donald Trump the night of the election both made conciliatory statements not towards the other, but towards this idea of working together,” Cannon told host Joe Concha.
“Obviously there are areas, infrastructure comes to mind instantly, that this country needs,” he continued. “You’re not going to be able to run roughshod over the other side. You can have gridlock if you want gridlock, but if they choose to find things that they want to work on in common, it’s the perfect setup for it.”
Cannon cited former President Clinton’s work with former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) in the 1990s.
“[Clinton] was depressed at first. He gave press conferences and speeches. He said things like ‘I’m still relevant,’ which is a remarkably weak thing for a president to say,” Cannon said.
“After he got over the shock of it, he rolled up his sleeves and he went to work, and he found things that he and Gingrich could work on,” he said. “He was more successful really, then he should have been.”
“Both sides won. The Republicans got a responsible budget, and Bill Clinton got the credit for it,” Cannon added.
