Pollster Mallory Newall said in an interview that aired Thursday on “What America’s Thinking” that 2020 polls at this point only tell Americans about candidates’ name recognition.
“It’s all about name recognition,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on Wednesday.
Newall’s comments come as recent polls show former Vice President Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) as front-runners in the potential Democratic primary field.
Despite his loss to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) is also seen by voters as a potential favorable contender.
“His name recognition has also risen I mean, you don’t raise $38 million dollars in one quarter alone and not see a huge boost in your national name ID,” Newall said of O’Rourke.
Biden, Sanders, O’Rourke, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) topped a new Focus on Rural America poll first obtained by Politico, which was conducted among Iowa voters.
The Democratic field could see more than 20 contenders line up for the chance to take on President Trump in 2020.
The DNC on Thursday announced they would have a schedule of 12 primary debates between 2019 and 2020.
