Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was not trying to score a political victory last year when she released DNA test results showing she has traces of Native American ancestry, Democratic pollster Molly Murphy said Wednesday.
“I think the fact that she did it when she did, going into the midterms, I think it was trying to put out her statement,” Murphy, a partner at ALG Research, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
“There was a no-win answer for her,” Murphy said. “The president was going to keep bringing it up as she ran. He loves to bring it up.”
“I think it was her effort to try to put out there, bury it, and move on,” she added. “So I think the question is, can she move on from it? I definitely don’t think she was trying to win the day the way she put that out, just given the timing.”
Murphy’s comments come after Warren announced on Monday that she was launching a 2020 presidential exploratory committee.
Warren faced backlash last year after she released the results of a DNA test showing she has Native American ties.
President Trump regularly disparages Warren by referring to her as “Pocahontas.”
