Democratic pollster Molly Murphy said in an interview that aired Tuesday on “What America’s Thinking” that government health-care programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare, are more popular than private insurance plans.
“People like Medicare a whole lot more than they like getting their insurance off the private market,” Murphy, a partner at ALG Research, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Monday.
“They believe that the coverage is still better. They believe that they still like their doctors. It is still a program that has net positive approval,” she continued.
“Medicaid is also extremely popular, even in places where you wouldn’t expect it. Even in Republican states, they still like Medicaid,” she said. “If you ask them, they still want to expand Medicaid if they’re in a state [where] Medicaid hasn’t been expanded.”
“People are very able to throw stones at the health-care system, the private insurance market is the most broken … amongst all of them,” she said. “The costs are too high, the coverage is not good, and it is just a confusing system where they don’t know what they’re going to get, cost wise.”
Murphy was responding to a new Gallup survey that showed that 70 percent of Americans view the current health-care system as “having major problems” or being “in a state of crisis.”
