Democratic pollster Pia Nargundkar told Hill.TV in an interview on Monday that the changing demographics in the U.S. has led to Democrats merging their messages on racial and economic equality.
“I think Democrats are very in tune to this changing demographic electorate,” Nargundkar, a senior associate at ALG Research, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“You can see it both in the messengers that they’re using as well as their message,” she continued.
“I think after 2018, you’ve seen the rise of people like [Reps.] AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-N.Y.], and Rashia Tlaib [D-Mich], and Ilhan Omar [D-Minn.],” she said. “Young, diverse women making a case, and you’re also seeing the conjunction of the economic equity and the racial justice equity message.”
“I think that is a result of this sort of the changing demographic,” she said.
Calls for economic and racial equality have also been heard on the 2020 campaign trail, with candidates such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) calling for higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans while promoting social justice issues.
