Raising taxes on the wealthy is ‘extremely popular,’ says Dem pollster

Democratic pollster Nancy Zdunkewicz said in an episode of Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” that aired on Tuesday that raising taxes is “extremely popular” among most Americans.

“Make no mistake about it, raising taxes on the rich is extremely popular,” Zdunkewicz, managing editor at Democracy Corps, told host Jamal Simmons on Monday.

“If you take this, and you pull out and look at the larger context, and you say what is it if we have hundreds of people who are making, or thousands of people, or ten percent of the country that is making large amounts of wealth, and do we think that it’s fair for them to not have to pay higher taxes,” she continued.

“If you pull off from this one, one-off scenario where I can’t say I’m not going to win the lottery to is it fair for our society to be structured this way when some people have so much, and some have so little, and everyone’s working,” she said.

Recent polling appears to support the idea of raising taxes on the rich, which has been amplified in recent months by progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), as well as 2020 contenders Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Fifty-nine percent of registered voters said they supported Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal of raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, according to a Hill-HarrisX survey released last month.
