Pollster Mallory Newall told Hill.TV on Wednesday that women who support Democratic candidates may be doing so in part to push the party to become more representative of them.
“Generally speaking, women in the American public tend to lean more Democratic, and vote Democratic,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“Perhaps they’re seeking representation from a party that they want to look more and more like them,” she added.
Fifty-nine percent of women voted for Democrats in the 2018 midterm elections, compared to 40 percent who voted for Republicans.
The midterms translated into huge gains for women in Congress, with 102 women serving in the House and 25 women in the Senate. Democrats boast a higher percentage of women in both chambers.
Democratic pollster Pia Nargundkar argued in the same interview Wednesday that women tend to favor Democrats due to President Trump’s rhetoric about women.
“When you have the head of the Republican Party clearly not respecting women, women are not going to be inclined to run for or vote for that party,” Nargundkar, a senior associate at ALG Research, said.
