Male candidates seeking the White House are getting more media coverage than women running in the 2020 race, pollster Mallory Newall told Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” on Monday.
“I think when you look at who the candidates are that are getting a lot of the media coverage, it’s mostly male candidates right now,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV host Jamal Simmons.
Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have received much of the media coverage so far due to their front-runner status and name recognition.
That level of media attention comes at a time when female candidates are receiving more negative coverage than their male counterparts, according to a recent Northeastern University study.
The study, which was updated late last month, found that male candidates in the 2020 race were more often characterized with positive words or descriptions than their female counterparts.
Newall said Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is an example of a female candidate who has not received significant media coverage.
“Elizabeth Warren is putting out tons and tons of policy proposals and not getting very much attention,” Newall said. “Is that because she’s a woman, or is that because Americans are less interested by clear policy?”
Warren has released several policy proposals in recent weeks, including a plan to cancel nearly all student loan debt and allow students to attend public colleges tuition-free.
She was also the first 2020 Democratic contender to call on the House to start impeachment proceedings against President Trump.
