Most voters don’t fall into particular ideological lane, says progressive strategist

Progressive strategist Ruy Teixeira said on Monday that most voters do not fall within strict ideological lanes.

“The idea that the goal for a candidate should be to dominate a lane doesn’t really make that much sense when you consider the fact that most voters, even in Democratic primaries, probably aren’t just in one lane, and that there’s a number of different preferences and priorities people may have,” Teixeira, author of “The Optimistic Leftist,” told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”

“They’re not sort of committed to a lane,” he continued. “It’s kinda of like, OK, there’s the Elizabeth Warren lane that corresponds to my policy preferences, so I’m for her.”

“They have a broader and more disparate sense of preferences and the electability thing really sort of gets plugged in there very heavily for a lot of Democrats who are sick of Trump and just want somebody who can get elected,” he said.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) are among the Democratic presidential primary’s progressive challengers, while former Vice President Joe Biden, the current front-runner, is considered a more centrist candidate.
