Poll: Sanders, Warren top Democratic voters’ list of potential VP contenders

Democrats want their party’s presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden to pick a progressive as his running mate, according to a new Hill-HarrisX poll.

Among registered Democratic voters, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) top the list of potential vice presidential contenders, at 24 percent and 17 percent, respectively.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) was the choice of 11 percent, while Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and former South Bend, Ind., mayor, Pete Buttigieg receive 6 percent each.

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, another progressive, was the pick of 4 percent.

Two percent each picked Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D).

Four percent of Democrats chose “other” and 18 percent said they were unsure in the April 26-27 survey.

Biden has pledged to chose a woman to join him on the ticket, but a large number of women polled, 20 percent, said they hoped Sanders would get the nod.

Warren won the second-most support among women, with 11 percent saying she should be the pick.

Pollsters say these early numbers may be based more on name recognition than anything else.

“Right now, this may be simply a function of name recognition,” Mallory Newall, Director of Research at Ipsos, told Hill.TV. “I think that there’s a list of women that are still trying to be introduced to the American public.”

The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 930 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
