The Hill’s 12:30 Report: Trump ‘very troubled’ by Tulsa shooting | Don King stumps for Trump | Lawmaker munches Skittles at hearing | CNN denies Lewandowski suspension | ‘Buffalo Nite’ on Capitol Hill
NOT THE FIRECRACKER STATEMENT WE’D EXPECT: Donald Trump in a tweet called on Americans to come together after separate police shootings of black men in Charlotte, N.C., and Tulsa, Okla. “The situations in Tulsa and Charlotte are tragic. We must come together to make America safe again … Hopefully the violence & unrest in Charlotte will come to an immediate end. To those injured, get well soon. We need unity & leadership.” http://bit.ly/2coT1zX
Context: This is a much more subdued response than Trump’s reaction to the Orlando shooting, for example: http://huff.to/2cZIdrp
Trump later spoke about the shooting at an event, adding… that he is “very troubled” by the Tulsa shooting. Trump said that it looked like the man killed did everything he should have done when he was confronted
by police. http://bit.ly/2cKGXua
Happy Hump Day! I’m Cate Martel with a quick recap of what you missed this morning — and what’s on tap for the rest of the day. Send comments, story ideas and weekend plans to cmartel@digital-release.digital-release.thehill.com, @CateMartel and on Facebook.
{mosads}BREAKING — ANOTHER JOB, ANOTHER ‘IS HE IN? IS HE OUT?’ STORYLINE: Mediaite’s J.D. Durkin is reporting that former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who joined CNN as a political contributor, has been suspended from CNN. Why: The network found out Lewandowski was still being paid by the Trump campaign, separate from (!) his severance package. How we know: Federal Election Commission filings show the Trump campaign gave Lewandowski $20,000 for “strategy consulting.” Keep in mind: Lewandowski’s hiring at CNN was very controversial at the network. http://bit.ly/2cKnYQm
OH BUT WAIT…: CNN is denying the report saying, “No he is not suspended. He will be on our air later today.” http://bit.ly/2cQJeS9
REACTION FROM TRUMP CAMPAIGN SPOX HOPE HICKS: “Corey Lewandowski, who is no longer involved in the campaign, continues to receive monthly severance payments. The campaign will continue to honor its contract with Mr. Lewandowski, which stipulates he will be paid through the end of the year. These payments are in no way compensation for services rendered.”
ONE TRUMP, TWO TRUMP, RED TRUMP, BLUE TRUMP: Via The Hill’s Amie Parnes, in closed-door sessions, Hillary Clinton is prepping for multiple Donald Trump personalities. Think: Subdued Trump vs. full-punches Trump willing to bring up the Clintons’ marriage and the suicide of Vince Foster. What we don’t know: Who is playing Trump in the sessions. http://bit.ly/2cRf5QR
For some reason, this is exactly what I’m picturing debate prep looking like –> http://bit.ly/29XjjZg
BABY’S…ER, PRESIDENT’S FIRST VETO OVERRIDE: Via The Hill’s Alexander Bolton and Jordain Carney, the Senate will stay in session next week for a looming showdown with President Obama over legislation making it easier for the families of victims of the 9/11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia. What’s next: Obama is expected to veto the legislation by Friday. However, it has overwhelming bipartisan support and could reach the two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override the veto. Why it’s big: This would be President Obama’s FIRST congressional override. http://bit.ly/2cQtsXt
THROWBACK — ROMNEY RELEASED HIS TAXES FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY: On Feb. 28, 2016 (yes, this year!), Donald Trump tweeted: “Mitt Romney didn’t show his tax return until SEPTEMBER 21, 2012, and then only after being humiliated by Harry [Reid]! A bad messenger for estab!” And here we are, Sep. 21 and Trump has still not released his taxes. Hey, pot? It’s kettle. http://bit.ly/2cULnsG
DEVELOPING THIS MORNING – DUUUUUDE, REALLY?? Via The Daily Mail, Anthony Weiner reportedly carried on a months-long online relationship with a troubled 15-year-old girl. It involved him asking the girl to dress up in a ‘school-girl’ outfit and pressing her to engage in ‘rape fantasies.’ http://dailym.ai/2cHD8m1
BREWS AND BROS: Last night, BuzzFeed Brews relaunched at the Newseum, where reporter Tarini Parti interviewed Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah), who had quite the bromance brewing. Isn’t it ironic: Booker and Lee are two senators who don’t drink alcohol. Funniest part of the night:
Booker, talking about Republicans who support criminal justice reform: “When I have the Koch brothers general counsel, Mark Holden, who is now legitimately a friend of mine…”
Parti: “And he’s here”
Booker: “Is he here? Really? That rat bastard didn’t give me a hug? … Hey, Mark.”
SPOTTED: Rick Tyler, former national spokesman and communications director for Cruz for President; Mark Holden, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Koch Industries, Inc.; The Daily Beast’s Tim Mak; The Wall Street Journal’s Byron Tau; The Washington Post’s Kelsey Snell; Roll Call’s Niels Lesniewski; Politico’s Hadas Gold; and Rachel Thomas, national press secretary, EMILY’S List. Also, BuzzFeed’s Ben Smith, John Stanton, Kate Nocera and many more.
