The black Democrat who represents the Dallas district where five police officers were killed Thursday night is calling for Congress to work to ease tensions between minority communities and police.

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) delivered the remarks before leading the House in a moment of silence on Friday.

After expressing condolences for the slain police officers, Johnson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, added that her “thoughts and prayers” were also with the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two African-American men who died in high-profile confrontations with police this week.

{mosads}”This recent violence serves as a stark reminder that relations between law enforcement and communities they serve remain extremely tense,” Johnson said from the center of the House floor while surrounded by fellow members of the Texas congressional delegation.

“We need to recognize the root cause of this tension and work to end the divisiveness between law enforcement and citizens,” she said.

Although she didn’t specify any particular bill she believes deserves a vote, Johnson said that the House should do more than a moment of silence in the aftermath of this week’s violence.

“I ask not just for a moment of silence, but also for firm action. We need to bring meaningful legislation to the floor that will help bridge the divide between law enforcement and communities,” Johnson said.

Lawmakers gave a standing ovation after Johnson commended the officers who responded to the shooting.

“These officers are among some of the most capable and professional law enforcement officers in the country, and I commend them for their bravery during this incident,” she said.
