Bailey said “several” civilians were injured in the incident around 2:30 p.m. local time, but all of them are in stable condition.

“They went for shelter once the shooting occurred and other brave officers were able to come to their rescue and take the shooter down,” said Bailey.

The deputy was taken to a nearby hospital and treated in the emergency room, with no reports immediately available on his condition.

Berrien County Commissioner Jeanette Leahey told The Detroit Free Press that she is “discouraged and disgusted.”

“We’re in a difficult time in the world. We all know that. It’s unfortunate that it’s coming close to home,” she said.

Following the shooting, buildings in the area were put on lockdown.
