DC Metro probing another stop signal violation

Officials for the Metrorail system in Washington, D.C., are investigating whether a train operator blew a stop signal on the Yellow Line on Wednesday — the second possible violation in two weeks.

{mosads}A spokesperson said the transit agency is probing a red-light signal overrun that may have occurred when a Yellow Line train pulled into Reagan National Airport station “at a low rate of speed” during Wednesday morning’s rush hour.

Local radio station WAMU reported that there has been an uptick in red signal overruns at Metro over the past several years, with more reported in 2015 than the previous two years combined.

“There were no injuries, no damage and no other trains on the track ahead,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The train was moved about a half hour later.”

The Federal Transit Administration is also looking into the incident.

The train operator has been removed from service while the investigation is underway, which is standard protocol, according to Metro.

An operator who blew a red signal was fired last week instead of being suspended because of the serious nature of that incident; the train nearly hit an oncoming passenger train and two inspectors who were on the track.
