Tor Project names new board of directors

The Tor Project announced an entirely new board of directors Wednesday, the latest fallout from a sexual misconduct scandal enveloping its most prominent employee.

A blog post on the Tor Project site referred to the move as “a bold decision in keeping with its commitment to the best possible health of the organization.”

{mosads}The new board includes Electronic Frontier Foundation Executive Director Cindy Cohn, sociologist and expert on Anonymous Gabriella Coleman, Human Rights Data Analysis Group Executive Director Megan Price, security experts Bruce Schneier and Matt Blaze and Tor programmer Linus Nordberg.

The anonymous internet browsing project was upended last month, when programmer and security industry personality Jacob Appelbaum left Tor amid complaints of “sexual mistreatment” that included accusations of rape. The Tor Project’s board resigned soon after.

Tor allows users to browse the web and special “hidden” sites without being tracked.

Since the project began, the project’s financial backers have included a number of international governments, including the United States’. While Tor helps enable largely untraceable criminal marketplaces, it is also an important tool for providing free speech outlets in countries with oppressive governments.
