Prosecutors won’t seek charges against Christie for Bridgegate

Prosecutors will not seek criminal charges against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) over the 2013 Bridgegate scandal, Reuters reported late Friday.

A letter from the Office of the Bergen County Prosecutor said “that charge cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” referring to the criminal misconduct charges. 

{mosads}The office said it could not prove that Christie had knowledge of lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, meant as retaliation against the mayor of Fort Lee for not supporting Christie’s re-election campaign.

The citizen complaint was filed against the governor in 2015.

“The Governor is gratified that the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has ended this baseless fiasco began by Mr. Brennan and perpetuated by Judge McGeady,” Christie spokesman Brian Murray said in a statement.

“It is right and appropriate that this injustice against the Governor is finally over.”

Christie has maintained that he had no prior knowledge of the lane closures.

Two of the governor’s former aides were convicted in November on charges related to the scandal.
