Huckabee: Elections a referendum on Republican Congress, not Trump

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said Sunday that last Tuesday’s victories for Democrats in state elections nationwide reflects voters’ displeasure with Congress.

“Was that a repudiation of President Trump? I think not,” Huckabee said on Fox News. “I think it’s a repudiation of a completely inept Congress who has so far failed to deliver on even the simple things like tax cuts and tax reform, which ought to be an easy layup for Republicans in Congress.”

Democrats last Tuesday won the governor races in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as several state and local elections. Many Democrats quickly pointed to the results as a rejection of President Trump and his rhetoric after his first year in office.

The outcomes in the races in New Jersey and Virginia were not unexpected, Huckabee said. However, Democrats cutting into Republican majorities in state legislatures can be a more significant cause for concern.

“They had a good week and I think it would be disingenuous for me or any other Republican to pretend that it didn’t matter,” Huckabee said. “You bet it mattered.”
