Man arrested after stealing armored vehicle from National Guard base
A soldier was arrested late Tuesday after stealing an armored personnel carrier from a Virginia National Guard base and leading police on a 60-mile chase.
The unidentified suspect, who stole the armored vehicle in Fort Pickett, Va., on Tuesday night, was arrested after abandoning the vehicle in downtown Richmond, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The report notes that authorities have not discovered how he was able to steal the vehicle at the facility.
The vehicle can reach speeds of 45 mph, according to the Times-Dispatch, and because police could not stop the vehicle, they elected to escort it throughout the chase. A Virginia state helicopter was also used to spotlight its movements.
The chase ended when the man stopped the vehicle in Richmond, Va. Police then used a dog to attack the suspect, before hitting him with a taser, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The incident is under investigation and charges are still pending.
