Cheney urges Fox viewers to ditch Trump
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) urged viewers of Fox News on Monday to support any candidate in the 2024 Republican presidential primary other than former President Trump.
“What I would say to Fox viewers, and I worked here for many years as you know,” Cheney said during an interview with Fox anchor Bret Baier. “The race today presents a number of candidates who will abide by the Constitution. You can have the policies that we all want, some of which Donald Trump put into place, some of which he didn’t. We can have conservative policies without having to torch the Constitution.”
Baier had asked Cheney, who has been doing a string of media interviews to promote a new memoir, why her message urging Republicans to reject Trump has “not been getting across” to more GOP voters, noting public polling showing the former president ahead by double digits.
“I would urge people watching today who are going to be voting in those caucuses and those primaries, vote for somebody else,” she reiterated. “Do not vote for the person who already tried to seize power.”
The Monday interview between Cheney and Baier was a notable moment for both the former congresswoman and Fox, the top-rated cable channel at which Cheney was previously a contributor that she has since not shied away from attacking.
Trump has railed against Fox for months, accusing the network of trying to boost his political enemies and not covering him fairly despite participating in a number of interviews and town hall events with some of the network’s leading talent.
Cheney has sparred with Baier specifically in the past, arguing during one appearance on the network in May 2021 that it bore some responsibility in boosting Trump’s false claims of a stolen election the previous fall.
Baier noted at one point during his conversation with Cheney on Monday an interview he held with the former president earlier this year, during which he told Trump “he did not win the election.”
Cheney, a member of of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, during a December 2021 hearing read text messages from Fox hosts and other people close to the former president showing them pleading with the White House to get Trump to call off his supporters as the attack was happening.
“This is about ensuring that you’re going to vote [for] somebody who is going to uphold the rule of law,” she told the anchor on Monday. “Donald Trump has demonstrated he won’t.”
