Man charged with hitting British politician Nigel Farage with milkshake

A man on Tuesday was charged with common assault and criminal damage for throwing a milkshake at British politician Nigel Farage, Reuters reported.

Farage, a member of the European Parliament who formerly led the U.K. Independence Party (UKIP) before leaving it to form the Brexit Party in March, was covered in a milkshake while crossing a street in Newcastle on Monday.

The Brexit leader was in the northeastern city at a campaign event for the upcoming European Parliament elections.

{mosads}Northumbria Police reportedly charged a 32-year-old man, Paul Crowther, in the incident.

“At around 1 p.m., a 55-year-old man had a milkshake thrown at him in the city center,” police said in a statement obtained by Reuters. “A 32-year-old man was detained at the scene and arrested by police.”

Farage is one of several far-right British figures to be hit with milkshakes in recent weeks. Several have been thrown at UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin, and anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson was also hit with one.

Farage tweeted after the incident Monday, saying that many in the United Kingdom who support staying in the European Union have “become radicalised.”

“Sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible,” Farage tweeted.

“For a civilised democracy to work you need the losers consent, politicians not accepting the [Brexit] referendum result have led us to this,” he added.
