Congressional Black Caucus blasts Greene for ‘unhinged’ remarks about George Floyd

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has condemned recent comments made by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), in which she accused Democrats of worshiping George Floyd, the 46-year-old Black man who was murdered by a white Minneapolis police officer in 2020.

Speaking to a crowd of reporters after Monday’s House subcommittee hearing on the origins of COVID-19, Greene expressed her anger over comments made by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.).

“We have Jamie Raskin in there accusing us of worshiping Trump, worshiping a convicted felon,” Greene said.

When a reporter pointed out that the former president is, in fact, a convicted felon because he was found guilty of 34 felony charges on Thursday, Greene invoked Floyd.

“Yeah, so was George Floyd, and everybody — and you all too, the media — worship George Floyd. Democrats worship George Floyd. There were riots burning down the f—ng country over George Floyd,” Greene responded.

After Floyd was killed in 2020, worldwide protests broke out. Advocates called for immediate police reform, citing the disproportionate number of Black Americans killed by police each year.

Greene went on to share her disdain for Dr. Anthony Fauci, former head of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Disease, and added that she is “sick and tired of the bulls–t antics” of the Democrats.

But in sharing a clip of her comments on social media, Greene focused on her remarks about Floyd.

“I’m tired of Democrat antics claiming Republicans worship Donald Trump. I worship God!” Greene posted on the social platform X

“Democrats are still worshiping Convicted Felon George Floyd.”

Her tweet quickly drew the attention of the Congressional Black Caucus on Tuesday.

“This is unhinged even for @RepMTG,” the caucus wrote on X

“Her actions are unacceptable even by the lowest of Republican standards. George Floyd did not deserve to die, and a member of Congress should have the decency to acknowledge his humanity.”

Floyd, who did have a record for mostly nonviolent drug offenses, died after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for more than 9 minutes.

During that time, video footage showed Floyd repeatedly telling the surrounding officers he could not breathe.

After his death, the police officers involved in the encounter were indicted.

Derek Chauvin, the officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck, was convicted and sentenced to more than 20 years for depriving Floyd of his constitutional rights.

Floyd’s family just acknowledged the fourth anniversary of his murder last month, and members of the CBC marked the anniversary with the reintroduction of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
