Trump campaign says former president is ‘fine’ after shooting at rally

The Trump campaign confirmed that the former president is “fine” after an apparent shooting took place during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement. 

“He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow,” he added.

Trump was delivering remarks in Butler, Pa., just days before the start of the Republican National Convention. During the rally, what sounded several gunshots could be heard, and Trump quickly reached for his right ear.

He later dropped under the lectern after being urged to get down. Secret Service agents swarmed over him while attendees screamed. Agents could be heard saying the shooter was down.

Trump was later escorted off the stage surrounded by agents, and footage could be seen showing Trump with blood near his right ear. Before exiting the stage, he fist-pumped at the crowd, appearing to tell them “fight.”

Details about what happened were not immediately clear. The White House said President Biden, who is in Delaware, had been briefed regarding the incident. 

A spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service said on X the incident was now being considered a “active Secret Service investigation” and said “Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe.”
