The Democratic mayor of Portland, Ore., Ted Wheeler, won reelection on Tuesday.

With more than 90 percent of the vote counted as of 11 p.m. local time, Wheeler was leading progressive challenger Sarah Iannarone, 47 percent to 41 percent, and was projected as the winner, OregonLive reported.

The victory makes Wheeler the first person elected to consecutive terms as mayor in more than a decade, OregonLive noted.

Portland for months has seen political protests and unrest following the police killings of Black Americans.

“We’re going to need to come together as never before to address short-term issues and the long-term changes and investments needed to rebuild our economy, rebuild confidence in law enforcement and restore hope for our future,” Wheeler said Tuesday evening, according to the news outlet.

There was more unrest in Portland on Tuesday night, with local media reporting hundreds of people marching in the streets, chanting “Black Lives Matter” and setting at least one small fire in public.

President Trump clashed with Wheeler earlier this year following several violent outbursts near a federal courthouse in downtown Portland. The president accused local authorities of being weak on crime and threatened to send federal troops in to quell the unrest.

“Ted Wheeler, the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland, who has watched great death and destruction of his City during his tenure, thinks this lawless situation should go on forever. Wrong! Portland will never recover with a fool for a Mayor,” Trump tweeted in late August.

Wheeler shot back, accusing Trump of making the situation in his city worse.

“Do you seriously wonder, Mr. President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence?” Wheeler said. “It’s you who have created the hate and the division.”
