Romney heckled by Trump supporters on flight to DC

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Tuesday was confronted by supporters of President Trump at the airport in Salt Lake City and subsequently heckled on a flight to Washington, D.C.

“Why aren’t you supporting President Trump?” a woman recording the senator says after she walks up to Romney while he is waiting at a gate in the airport terminal.

The Utah senator asked the woman to put on her mask, reminding her it is required by law, before engaging in a discussion with her.

“I am supporting him,” Romney replied, adding that he has supported many of the things Trump has done while in office.

The woman asks him if he’s going to support Trump “in the fraudulent votes,” referring to Congress’s counting of the Electoral College vote slated for Wednesday in Washington, to which Romney replies, “No, I’m not.”

“It’s a long story, but we have a Constitution and the constitutional process is clear, and I will follow the Constitution, and then I will explain all that when we meet in Congress,” Romney tells the woman.

The woman then presses Romney about his lack of support for Trump in the 2020 election and tells the Republican “you work for us.”

“I work for the people of Utah,” replies before gathering his belongings and attempting to walk away from the woman who, along with another supporter of Trump, continues to follow him.

A man, who was also recording Romney, berated him as he attempted to leave, telling him: “You’re a joke.”

A subsequent video shared by another Twitter user on the flight from Salt Lake to D.C. the same day shows Trump supporters shouting at Romney while aboard the airplane.

In the video, passengers chant “Traitor!” for several seconds as a number of them hold their phones up to record the interaction. One person is heard yelling at Romney to resign.

A few of the passengers can be seen not wearing masks in the video.

A joint session of Congress is slated to meet on Wednesday to formally count the Electoral College vote in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.

Trump has claimed, without evidence, that widespread voter fraud led to his loss and has falsely claimed that Vice President Pence, as he presides over Wednesday’s congressional proceedings, could invalidate or delay the certification of Electoral College votes.

Romney has said he will vote to certify Biden’s win and has called claims of voter fraud made by the president “reckless.”

Trump “is wrong to say the election was rigged, corrupt and stolen,″ Romney said in November, saying his challenging of the election’s result “damages the cause of freedom here and around the world … and recklessly inflames destructive and dangerous passions.”

Several Republican senators have said they too will contest the election’s result, a move that would spark hours of debate in both chambers of Congress before the votes can be certified.

Thousands are expected to rally for Trump in Washington, D.C., as Congress debates certification. Romney’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
