Hogan says ‘stakes are too high’ for another Trump presidency

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is warning Republicans against supporting former President Trump if he decides to run for president again.  

“With America on the wrong path, the stakes are too high to double down on failure,” Hogan told Fox News on Sunday. 

“My friend Governor Hutchinson is exactly right,” Hogan added. 

Hogan, an outspoken critic of Trump during his time in the White House, reportedly referenced comments made over the weekend by Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R), who said at a conference of statewide leaders in Washington that “anybody who wants to talk about the last election is going to lose the next election.” 

“First of all, I don’t believe the election was stolen, and I respect the results,” Hutchinson said. “They were challenged as need be, and the result is the fact that President Biden is in office.” 

Since leaving office, Trump in public statements, at rallies and during media appearances has falsely asserted that he won the 2020 election and has suggested the contest was “rigged” against him. 

Multiple congressional Republicans have supported those claims. 

But Hogan and other Republicans have pushed back on Trump’s statements about the election and suggested it is important for the Republican Party to move on from the former president. 

“Personally, I’d prefer endorsements from people who didn’t lose Maryland by 33 points,” Hogan said late last year after Trump announced an endorsement for Hogan’s GOP primary challenger. 

Hogan, who has one of the highest approval ratings of any governor in the country, is viewed by many as a potential 2024 presidential candidate.
